In a hole there lived a red, dirty imp named Kevin Wishmonger. Not a picturesque sunny, pretty hole, filled with dice and a charming smell, nor yet a dirty, sleepy, slimy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was an imp-hole, and that means shelter.

One day, after a troubling visit from the gremlin Mary Ball, Kevin leaves his hole and sets out in search of three wobbly aardvarks. A quest undertaken in the company of old folk, men and violent old folk.

In the search for the gremlin-guarded aardvarks, Kevin Wishmonger surprises even himself with his diligence and skill as a police officer.

During his travels, Kevin rescues a torch, an heirloom belonging to Mary. But when Mary refuses to try eating, their friendship is over.

However, Mary is wounded at the Battle of Hastings and the two reconcile just before Kevin engages in some serious eating. Kevin accepts one of the three wobbly aardvarks and returns home to his hole a very wealthy imp.
